Trading-day reset time

Also searched: trading day reset · daily reset time · session reset · day boundary · reset time

The clock time — in the firm's timezone, not your local midnight — at which a new trading day begins: the daily-loss window, the end-of-day drawdown mark, and the trading-day count all roll over.

Definition

Every firm defines when its trading day starts. That boundary, set in the firm's own timezone, is when several rules roll over at once: the daily-loss counter zeroes, an end-of-day trailing line stamps its new mark, and the trading-day count ticks over.

Because it's tied to a fixed timezone, the reset follows that clock through daylight-saving changes — so relative to where you trade from, the boundary can shift by an hour twice a year.

Why it fails evaluations

The classic error is trading across the boundary as if it were still the same day: a loss taken just before the reset lands on the OLD day's budget, while a trade a minute after it starts a fresh count. Get that backwards and you tip a daily limit you thought had already reset.

On end-of-day trailing firms the reset is where your drawdown line can ratchet up — where you stand when the clock strikes is the number that sticks.

FAQ

Does the trading day reset at my local midnight?

No. It resets at the firm's chosen time in the firm's timezone, regardless of where you trade from — and it follows that timezone through daylight-saving shifts.

What resets at the trading-day boundary?

The daily-loss counter zeroes, an end-of-day trailing drawdown stamps its new mark, and the trading-day count rolls over for minimum-day requirements.
