Prop trading glossary
The rules that actually fail prop-firm evaluations, in plain language — and, for each one, exactly which of the 19 verified firms use which variant. Every firm list is drawn from the same verified rule data TradersGuild runs on, so it stays current as coverage grows.
Drawdown
Static vs trailing drawdown
The max-loss line is either static (a fixed floor set on day one that never moves) or trailing (a floor that follows your profit upward as you make money).
EOD-trailing vs intraday-trailing
Among trailing drawdowns, the line either follows your live intraday peak (open profit included) or only ratchets when a trading day closes at a new high.
Breakeven / buffer lock
On many trailing accounts the line stops trailing once you've earned enough profit — it locks at your starting balance (or a small buffer above it) and no longer follows further gains up.
Daily loss
Daily loss limit
A cap on how much you can lose in a single trading day. Its basis — what the cap is measured from — varies by firm and is where most confusion lives.
Hard breach vs soft breach (day-lockout)
A hard breach fails the account outright. A soft breach only locks you out for the rest of the day — the account survives to trade tomorrow.
Consistency & pace
Consistency rule
A cap that stops any single day from being too large a share of your profit. It gates the pass or payout — it delays the money, it doesn't fail the account.
Minimum trading days
The fewest distinct days you must trade before a phase can be passed or a payout taken. A day usually counts if you close at least one trade before the reset.
Timing
Mechanics
Open / floating P&L counting
Whether a rule is measured on your balance (closed trades only) or your equity (closed plus the floating profit/loss of open positions). Equity-based rules can breach before you close.
High-water mark
The highest point your account has reached — the reference a trailing drawdown measures down from. As the high-water mark rises, the trailing floor rises with it.
