The map of native lockouts

Verified 2026-07-13 · quoted from each source's own docs

Most of the locks traders wish they had already exist. Your platform or firm probably ships a daily-loss lock, an auto-flatten, or a self-pause right now — you just have to switch it on. This is the honest map of which ones are real, across 8 platforms and firms we've read on their own docs.

But here's the fact that changes everything, from Tradovate's own documentation: a self-set lock can be unlocked at any time — in seconds — by the same trader who set it. That's why a lock alone doesn't fix tilt: if you can lift it while you're emotional, you will. A lock stops one trade; discipline stops the pattern. The move is to pair the lock you already have (or the irreversible variant some firms offer) with a system that keeps you honest between now and the next trade.

To be clear about our own place in that: TradersGuild does not lock you out. It isn't a broker and isn't connected to your firm, so it can't. It runs on the trades you log, shows your room before the next trade, and coaches the discipline around the locks below. Broker auto-sync is coming soon.

At a glance

Every row is a native feature of the platform or firm named — compared on the one column that decides whether a lock actually holds: can you lift it mid-day?

Platform auto-flatten locks

Built into the trading platform itself, so they work on any account you run on it. You switch them on; they liquidate and lock when your own limit is hit.

TradovateRisk Settings (auto-liquidate & lock)

Live & demo Tradovate Brokerage accounts — NOT evaluation accounts

Trader-set daily/weekly profit targets and loss limits on the Tradovate platform that auto-liquidate and lock the account when hit — revocable by default, or deliberately frozen for the session via an opt-in lock. Live/demo Brokerage accounts only, not evaluations.

Who sets it
Trader (Risk Settings; off by default)
Revocable mid-day?
Default yes (raise/disable) — opt-in 'Lock Risk Settings if Trading Locked' holds to session end
Applies to
Live & demo Tradovate Brokerage accounts — NOT evaluation accounts

Tradovate's Risk Settings let you set your own daily and weekly profit targets and loss limits inside the platform. Profit and loss is netted in real time (all fees and commissions included) over a session that runs 5:00 PM to 3:45 PM Central, Sunday through Friday.

When a limit is hit the platform closes open positions, cancels working orders, and blocks new positions until the next session — 5:00 PM Central the same day for daily limits, or 5:00 PM Central the following Sunday for weekly limits. The same panel also carries a Max Position Size cap and a Products Permitted list.

By default you can lift a limit yourself — raise the number or disable it. The deliberate-discipline option is 'Lock Risk Settings if Trading Locked': once enabled and the limit hits, the settings can't be changed until the session ends, and Tradovate reps can't unlock it for you either. Revocable by default, irreversible by choice — that opt-in is the whole point.

Two honest caveats. These are liquidation triggers, not guaranteed caps — slippage can carry the fill past your number, and a $0 setting means instant liquidation. And they don't apply to evaluation accounts: Risk Settings work only on live and demo Tradovate Brokerage accounts, so on a prop eval you defer to the firm.

Risk Settings can be configured on your Tradovate account to automatically lock it once specific profit or loss thresholds are reached. Daily and weekly profit targets and loss limits are available.
Daily profit and loss is calculated based on net profit and loss, starting at 5:00 PM Central Time and ending at 3:45 PM Central Time, Sunday through Friday... real-time updates that include all fees and commissions.
The “...” marks text elided between the two on-page sentences; both fragments are reproduced exactly.
all open positions are closed, and any working orders are canceled. No new positions... until the start of the next trading session: 5:00 PM Central the same day for daily limits, or 5:00 PM Central the following Sunday for weekly limits.

Lock Risk Settings if Trading Locked — Locks the Account Risk Settings until the end of the trading session. Once enabled and the set limit is hit, Risk Settings cannot be changed until the session ends (unlocks between 5:00 and 6:00 PM ET).
The opt-in irreversible variant — once chosen and triggered, the trader cannot lift it until the session ends. This is the “good” self-lock.
Tradovate representatives are not able to unlock it on your behalf.
Once the opt-in lock is triggered, not even Tradovate support lifts it early — the deliberately unrevocable state.
The Daily Loss Limit and Weekly Loss Limit are liquidation triggers, not guaranteed loss caps
Honest caveat: slippage can carry the fill past the limit; a $0 setting means immediate liquidation.
Risk Settings are not applicable to evaluation accounts and can only be used with live and demo Tradovate Brokerage accounts.
Applicability correction: on a prop EVAL account these platform Risk Settings do not apply — contact the account provider.

NinjaTraderRisk Settings (auto-lock daily/weekly limits)

Own NinjaTrader Live or Demo (Simulation) accounts — NOT prop-firm accounts

Trader-set daily/weekly profit targets and loss limits in the NinjaTrader Account Dashboard that auto-liquidate and lock until the next session — revocable by default, or deliberately frozen via the opt-in 'Prevent Changes When Trading is Locked'. Your own NinjaTrader accounts only, not prop-firm accounts.

Who sets it
Trader (Account Dashboard > Risk Settings)
Revocable mid-day?
Default yes (toggle/edit) — opt-in 'Prevent Changes' locks settings until 4:00 PM Central
Applies to
Own NinjaTrader Live or Demo (Simulation) accounts — NOT prop-firm accounts

Risk Settings live in your NinjaTrader Account Dashboard (Settings > Accounts > Risk Settings). You set daily and/or weekly profit targets and loss limits; when a limit is reached the platform closes all open positions, cancels working orders, and blocks new positions until the next session.

Sessions reset at 5:00 PM Central the same day for daily limits, or 5:00 PM Central the following Sunday for weekly limits. It's a platform control on your own NinjaTrader Live or Demo (Simulation) accounts.

By default these are revocable — toggle a limit off or edit the value any time. The deliberate-discipline move is the opt-in 'Prevent Changes When Trading is Locked': once a limit locks you, your Risk Settings also lock until 4:00 PM Central, and NinjaTrader support won't unlock them for you. That's the lock you deliberately can't revoke — the whole teach-not-lock point.

Two honest caveats. The loss limits are liquidation triggers, not guaranteed loss caps — slippage can push the fill past your number. And these platform Risk Settings are for your own NinjaTrader brokerage/sim accounts; on a prop-firm account NinjaTrader tells you to contact your prop firm provider directly.

Risk Settings can be configured in your NinjaTrader Account Dashboard to automatically lock your account once specific profit or loss thresholds are reached. You can set daily and weekly profit targets, as well as daily and weekly loss limits.
If the set risk limit is reached, all open positions are closed, and any working orders are canceled. No new positions can be established until the start of the next trading session: 5:00 PM Central the same day for daily limits or 5:00 PM Central on the following Sunday for weekly limits.
If a Daily or Weekly Loss Limit or Profit Trigger locks your trading, your Risk Settings will also lock until the end of the trading day at 4:00 PM Central.
The opt-in “Prevent Changes When Trading is Locked” variant — the lock a trader deliberately can't revoke.
NinjaTrader Customer Support is unable to unlock your Risk Settings on your behalf.
Once the opt-in freeze is triggered, not even support lifts it early — the deliberately unrevocable state.
The Daily Loss Limit and Weekly Loss Limit are liquidation triggers, not guaranteed loss caps
Honest caveat: slippage can carry the fill past the limit.
Looking to modify the risk settings on a prop firm account? Please contact your prop firm account provider directly.
Applicability: these platform Risk Settings are for the trader's own NinjaTrader brokerage/sim accounts; prop-firm accounts defer to the firm.

Apex / Rithmic R|Trader ProAuto Liquidate Criteria (trader-set flatten)

Accounts traded through Rithmic R|Trader Pro (e.g. Apex)

Five trader-set liquidation triggers in Rithmic's R|Trader Pro (used on Apex accounts) — from a minimum-balance floor to a trailing minimum that ratchets up with your gains. Set by you; Apex disclaims Rithmic as a third-party app. No firm-frozen/irreversible variant is documented.

R|Trader Pro (Rithmic's platform, used on Apex accounts) lets you configure Auto Liquidate Criteria: right-click the account > Auto Liquidate Criteria. Because it's a platform feature you set yourself, Apex disclaims responsibility for it as third-party software.

There are five triggers you can set: (1) a Minimum Account Balance floor; (2) a Percentage of Cash on Hand Lost; (3) a fixed Loss Limit; (4) a Trailing Minimum Account Balance that ratchets up as your balance grows (Account Balance − Liquidate Threshold); and (5) a Limited Trailing Minimum that stops ratcheting past a Max Min.

The trailing option is the subtle one: when you're up, the floor rises with you, so giving the gains back liquidates you. Apex's own example — Max Daily Loss $1,000, profit $2,000, balance falls back to +$1,000 — trips the auto-liquidation at the trailing minimum.

You set these yourself; there's no firm-frozen or irreversible variant documented on this page, so — unlike Tradovate's or NinjaTrader's opt-in freeze — we don't claim one here.

Since Rithmic is a third-party application, Apex Trader Funding cannot accept responsibility
Apex disclaims the platform tool as third-party — the criteria are trader-configured in R|Trader Pro.

Trader-set firm locks

Offered by the prop firm and turned on by YOU in your account settings. Some can be lifted in seconds; some you can deliberately make irreversible for the day — that choice is the whole point.

TopstepPersonal Daily Loss Limit (PDLL) suite

Trading Combine (eval) + Express Funded (funded)

Topstep's trader-set daily loss limit, with a deliberate choice between a limit you can lift any time and one you can freeze so you can't talk yourself out of it.

Who sets it
Trader (PDLL in Risk Settings)
Revocable mid-day?
By default yes — until you choose Lock-Out or Liquidate-and-Block
Applies to
Trading Combine (eval) + Express Funded (funded)

Topstep's Personal Daily Loss Limit (PDLL) is the flagship example of a lock done right — because it hands the trader BOTH a revocable version and an irreversible one, on purpose.

You can add a PDLL in Risk Settings whenever you like, even if you didn't set one at purchase. When the limit hits, you pick what happens: keep trading, liquidate, or liquidate and get locked out for the session.

By default a manual PDLL can be adjusted or removed. But you can also choose to freeze your settings for the day — after which you can't raise the limit to keep trading, no matter how much you want to. Choosing the irreversible option BEFORE you're tilted is the whole discipline move.

A separate purchase-set DLL behaves differently: it isn't removable, and it carries from the evaluation to your Express Funded account after you pass.

Didn't set one at purchase? Add a Personal Daily Loss Limit (PDLL) in Risk Settings any time.
Manual PDLLs can be adjusted or removed — unlike purchase-set DLLs.
Traders can adjust or remove manual PDLLs unless risk settings are locked; a PDLL set to “Liquidate and Block” can't be removed.
Do Nothing — keep trading / Liquidate — immediate liquidation / Liquidate and Block — liquidation + locked out for the session.
The three actions a trader can choose for when the PDLL hits.
'Lock Out Settings for the Day' freezes all settings for the rest of the session — so if liquidation triggers at $200, you can't raise the limit to keep trading.
The opt-in irreversible lock — once chosen, it can't be lifted until the next session. This is the “good” self-lock.
Applies to your Express Funded Account after you pass.
About the purchase-set DLL, which — unlike a manual PDLL — is not removable and carries eval → funded.

FundedNextSelf-pause / unpause (CFD accounts)

All CFD account types (Stellar Challenge/eval, Stellar FundedNext & Stellar Instant/funded)

A trader-controlled walk-away switch that halts all trading and can be lifted at will — a cooldown tool, not a loss-triggered flatten. One use per account lifetime.

Who sets it
Trader (self-pause from Account Overview)
Revocable mid-day?
Yes, at will — but one-time per account lifetime
Applies to
All CFD account types (Stellar Challenge/eval, Stellar FundedNext & Stellar Instant/funded)

FundedNext lets you pause your own CFD account: it completely halts trading and blocks any new position. Unlike the locks above, it isn't triggered by a loss — it's a deliberate walk-away switch.

You can unpause at any time yourself from your Account Overview. If FundedNext pauses your account instead (for operational or review reasons), only FundedNext can lift that. So who did the pausing decides who can undo it.

It's a one-time-per-account-lifetime feature, which makes it a considered break rather than a habit — spend it on the day you really need to step away.

All trading activity on your account is completely halted.
You will not be able to open any new positions.
manually unpause your account at any time from your Account Overview page
Contrasted in the same doc with: “if FundedNext pauses your account for operational or review reasons, only FundedNext can unpause it.”

Firm-enforced pauses & rules

Set and controlled by the firm, not you. Some auto-close and lock the day for you; others are pass/fail rules with no native lock at all — worth knowing which is which.

The5ersDaily Pause (automatic loss protection)

Hyper Growth (all stages) + Bootcamp funded stage

A firm-set automatic pause that closes open trades and disables the account until the next trading day when the daily protection level is hit.

Who sets it
Firm (automatic)
Revocable mid-day?
No — auto/firm; reopens next trading day
Applies to
Hyper Growth (all stages) + Bootcamp funded stage

The5ers' Daily Pause is enforced by the firm, not switched on by you. It's built as loss protection: when the day's level is reached, it closes your open trades and disables the account until the next trading day.

The level is measured from midnight 00:00 GMT+3, taken from whichever is higher of your balance or your equity — so a green start can raise the bar the pause is measured against.

Because it's firm-controlled and reopens on the next trading day, it is not a mid-day off switch. It applies on specific programs, not every account.

The daily pause is a loss protection that helps traders avoid significant losses.
all open trades get closed, and the account remains disabled until the next trading day.
The daily pause is taken from midnight 00:00 GMT+3 from the balance or equity of your account, the highest between them.
The Daily Pause applies for the Hyper Growth stage in all stages and the Bootcamp funded stage.

TopstepRisk Lock-In (firm-set floor)

Funded accounts (gains-based floor)

A firm-set floor on a funded account: drop below it and the account is liquidated and locked for the day. Set by Topstep's Risk Team — not trader-controllable.

Who sets it
Firm (Topstep Risk Team)
Revocable mid-day?
No — firm-set, not trader-controllable
Applies to
Funded accounts (gains-based floor)

Separate from the trader-set PDLL, Topstep's Risk Team can set a Risk Lock-In level on a funded account — a floor beneath your gains.

If your Net P&L drops below that floor, the account is liquidated and locked for the rest of the day, resuming the next trading day at 5:00 PM Central Time.

This one is not yours to lift. It's the firm-controlled counterpart to the PDLL, and it's why “who sets it” matters as much as what it does.

If your Net P&L drops below that floor, your account is liquidated and locked for the rest of the day.
Trading resumes at 5:00 PM Central Time on the next trading day.

FTMOMaximum Daily Loss (a rule, not a native lock)

FTMO evaluation + funded

An honest negative: FTMO's daily loss limit is a pass/fail rule your equity can't cross — the firm's own lesson describes no automatic lockout, forced close, or flatten.

Who sets it
Firm (pass/fail rule)
Revocable mid-day?
N/A — it's a rule, not a lock
Applies to
FTMO evaluation + funded

It's worth showing where a native lock ISN'T. FTMO's Maximum Daily Loss is a limit your equity can't drop below at any time; cross it and the rule is violated.

The firm's own lesson describes it as a pass/fail rule — it does not describe an automatic lockout, forced position close, or auto-flatten. Enforcement is the rule being failed, not the platform stopping you.

That's the useful distinction: a firm RULE tells you the line; a native LOCK acts at the line. If you want the account stopped for you, you have to bring your own discipline (or a platform lock like Tradovate's) — the rule alone won't do it.

The Maximum Daily Loss Limit is a limit below which your equity cannot drop at any time.
If your equity drops below this limit, the rule is considered violated.
The lesson describes no automatic lockout, forced close, or flatten — enforcement is the rule being failed, not a native lock.

MyFundedFuturesMax EOD (End of Day) Drawdown — no daily loss limit

MyFundedFutures evaluation (Max EOD Drawdown; 50K = 4% = $2,000)

MyFundedFutures runs no daily drawdown — just one Max EOD (End of Day) Drawdown line, set at 3% (4% on the 50K). It's enforced on open equity: dip below the minimum account balance intraday and the attempt fails. A firm rule with a hard liquidation edge, not a trader-set lock.

Who sets it
Firm (defined rule)
Revocable mid-day?
N/A — firm rule, not a trader lock; hard failure on the min-balance line
Applies to
MyFundedFutures evaluation (Max EOD Drawdown; 50K = 4% = $2,000)

MyFundedFutures doesn't use a daily drawdown at all. Instead it has a single Max EOD (End of Day) Drawdown, set at 3% generically (the 50K account is 4% = $2,000). The trailing EOD line locks in once you're up — at $100 plus the initial starting balance.

The honest part traders miss: even though it's an End-of-Day line, it's enforced on open equity intraday. If an open position dips your account below the minimum balance, the evaluation fails then — you don't get to close back above it by end of day.

So this isn't a native self-lock you switch on; it's a firm rule with a hard liquidation edge. Like FTMO's daily loss above, it defines the line — but here open-equity enforcement means the line bites intraday, not just at settlement.

We do not have a daily drawdown but we will have a Max EOD (End of Day) Drawdown... set at 3%. Also to be noted the Max EOD trailing locks in at $100 plus the initial starting balance.
The “...” marks elided text; the “no daily drawdown / one EOD line” framing and the $100 + starting-balance lock-in are the source's own.
open equity losses are taken into consideration when calculating whether or not the account failed on this rule. This means that if an open position dips your account balance below the minimum account balance, your evaluation attempt will fail.
The now-sourced enforcement wording: liquidation/failure on the minimum-balance line, counting open (unrealized) equity — so it bites intraday.
50K Accounts have 4% DD
The 3% is generic; the 50K account's EOD drawdown is 4% (= $2,000). Registry numbers unchanged — this only sources the enforcement wording.

These platforms and firms very likely have relevant lock or auto-flatten features too — but their documentation sits behind bot-walls or login gates we couldn't read directly. We publish only what we've read on the source's own domain, so rather than invent specifics, we list them here and leave them blank until we can verify a quote. Accuracy is the point.

FAQ

Do prop firms lock you out when you hit a daily loss limit?

It depends who set the limit and how. Some platform and firm features (Tradovate's daily loss limit, Topstep's PDLL, The5ers' Daily Pause) auto-liquidate and lock. Others — like FTMO's Maximum Daily Loss — are pass/fail rules with no native lock that closes you out. Check your specific platform and program.

Can I turn off a self-imposed trading lockout?

Usually yes — and fast. Tradovate's own docs say a daily-loss lock can be unlocked at any time by raising the limit or disabling it. That's exactly why a lock alone doesn't fix tilt: if you can lift it in seconds while tilted, you will. The fix is choosing an irreversible option before you're emotional (Topstep's 'Lock Out Settings for the Day' does this), plus a discipline habit around it.

What's the difference between a trader-set lock and a firm-set lock?

A trader-set lock (you turn it on) can usually be lifted by you — unless you deliberately froze it. A firm-set lock (Topstep's Risk Lock-In, The5ers' Daily Pause) is controlled by the firm and isn't yours to remove mid-day. Who sets it decides who can undo it.
